EDGECAM Enhances SGS European Tool Clinic

EDGECAM, the production machining CAD/CAM software, recently supported carbide cutting tool manufacturer SGS Tool Europe Ltd at its EU Tool Clinic which was attended by distributors, agents and customers from six countries.

A total of 12 delegates from Finland, Romania, Denmark, Turkey and the Netherlands, as well as the UK, attended the two-day clinic to learn more about implementing high performance cutting tools.

The ability to quickly create 3-axis toolpaths using feature-based machining, progressing to 5-axis applications after a period of training, were two essential factors in SGS Tool Europe Ltd  choosing to utilise EDGECAM in this Tool Clinic.

SGS Tool Europe Ltd Internal Technical Manager Barry Ward says: “We used EDGECAM strategies at the clinic to complement our range of high performance carbide tooling.”

The software programmed a GROB G350 5 axis machine to cut a number of components demonstrating the high efficiency Waveform Roughing Strategy, along with full slotting and drilling. “SGS are focused on providing end users with high performance solutions that rely on the cutting tool, machine tool and CAM strategy,” says Applications Engineer Raymond Bunn.

“EDGECAM enhanced our tool clinic considerably by showing tool paths being generated, on-screen simulations and ‘live’ machining demonstrations.”

SGS Tool Europe Ltd  brand names such as Z-Carb, S-Carb, V-Carb and Multi-Carb are used extensively across a range of industries including aerospace, automotive, medical, mould and die and power generation.
The New Z Carb HPR and been designed  to utilise the Waveform machining strategy – with heavy radial engagement typically 30% on Titanium.

Barry Ward says: “Many SGS tools are designed specifically to achieve the highest possible metal removal rates, making them ideal for EDGECAM’s Waveform Roughing strategy which utilises faster speed and feed rates with deeper depth of cut.

“Working with EDGECAM and machine tool manufacturer Grob ensures SGS provides an end user solution focused on efficiency and productivity, meeting all their machining needs.”

He says SGS Tool Europe Ltd  working with EDGECAM have undertaken multiple demonstrations based on the creation of 3-axis & 5-axis toolpaths and shown machine simulations to support presentations highlighting the benefits of high performance tooling.
